User Submitted Hints

Nancy Macdonald Jordan has made a terrific suggestion in a comment that she recently posted, “It would be great if all Beta users share hints, shortcuts, work arounds and lessons learned.”  I echo her suggestion and encourage you to do exactly that.

Please use this page to help each other make the most of Ancestry Press.

I would like to be able to adjust the front (print size) to make it larger and darker type.

    Reply from Ancestry Press:
You can change the text font type, size, color (toggle between black and white) and more by:
    1. Clicking on the text – when you do this some text editing tools will show up
    2. Selecting a font size and or font type from the dropdowns in the text editing tools
    3. You can toggle between black and white by clicking on the font color icon

Did you know you can copy photos and text from one page to another? Here’s how:
    1) Select the items you want to copy
    2) While holding down the “Ctrl” key, press the “C” key. This is expressed as Ctrl+C and is know as a keyboard shortcut for the Windows OS.
    3) Go to the page that you want to copy the items to
    4) Use the Windows OS keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V by holding down the “Ctrl” key and then pressing the “V” key at the same time. This will paste the selected items into the new page.

Did you know you can nudge objects?
Nudge means to move an object a small distance by pressing an arrow key on your keyboard.
    Here’s how it works:
    1. Select a photo, record, text or any other object by clicking on it with the mouse.
    2. Use the up, down, left and right keys on your keyboard to move the object a small distance.

After you have completed your 4 generation project you can go through and delete pages you dont want in there. then you add another 4 generation branch and go from there adding pages by typing in the individuals name for a family group sheet and it fills it in then you type the same name for records and it will show you what records you have saved. continue on till you have all your generations input. and Viola’ a cool family book!

I am looking forward to using this and printing some books for Christmas gifts. My problem right now is that the special letters in the Swedish alphabet do not print. We have Å Ä Ö . The first A has a little circle over it. The second A has two dots over it as does the O. The letters are just omitted. If someone could tell me how to get these letters working I would be the happiest American in Sweden.

Note from Ancestry Press: We have extended the font character sets so your special letters should come in now. If they don’t please let us know.

  6. Jan says:

    I started a tree in

I don’t have a hint, but hope that someone else has one for me.

I am working on a book for a Father’s Day gift. The ancestry of the book is great, but I would also like to add his descendants. Any ideas or suggestions on how to go about it? I just know that he would love to have his grandchildren and great grandchildren included too.
    Thanks for your time

I’m working on a laptop that does not have a printer attached. I’d like to save the book to a file that I can email to my office where I have a lovely color laser printer. Is there a way to do that? I don’t see any download capabilities here.

  10. Sandy says:

I also would like to know how to download my book so that I can print it from a ‘good printer’.

  11. Bill Stander says:

To the person who wants to “save” the printed file for later printing, you will have to save it to a printer driver that saves to a file, such as a Print to PDF driver. These files can then be transferred or e-mailed to your other computer and printed there.

Macintosh OS X users, have that ability built right-in. Just click on “Save as PDF” on the Print Screen.

  12. Donna Wood says:

For some reason, no record pages are generated when I make a family file, even though I have numerous records attacted to each person. The program will not allow me to add record pages after the family file is generated either. Is this due to something I am doing or not doing? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks so much!

  13. chris says:

Has anyone attempted to print out their family tree yet? I have done a few print previews and it looks very complicated- especially if I want to try to add addtional family members or source documents.
To BIll’s answer- what will it look like when I save it to another file and say take it to Kinko’s to print? does it have to be saved in the ancestrypress site?

  14. Norm Lewis says:

I seem to be in the same boat as Donna. I have attached census records and a WWI military draft recotd to a person in my tree. But when I generate the book, no pages are created for these events. The demo seems to indicate that census pages and WWI draft card pages will be generated as long as you have them attached to someone.

I even retried this by creating census and military events in the tree. But it doesn’t seem to work.

Now, the text from these records shows up in the asset bar, but no images (census or draft cards). I have watched the demo three times and read through everything, but cannot find an answer!!! Help!

Note from Ancestry Press: Apparently there is a bug where some of the records are not being pulled into the Ancestry Press project. We are looking into this and hope to have a fix soon. Please continue to let us know if you see problems like this so we can get them fixed. Thanks, Kelvin

  15. Bev says:

A month ago when I first tried this, census records, draft records, and ship manifests showed up automatically. Now they’re not showing up and I’m unable to add them manually. Something has definitely changed.

Also I wish there were template options instead of the only choices being add everything automatically or build the page from scratch. It would be great to say I want to add all family tree pages and documents, but not the timelines.

  16. chris says:

does any one monitor this and answer our questions?

Ancestry Press: Yes we do monitor this but intended this section to be for users to help each other by providing hints and suggestions. We will provide answers at times but don’t want to get in the way of users helping each other.

  17. Karen Binkley says:

My photos are not showing up now. They did in the beginning. What happened?

  18. Lee says:

If you are trying to print your project at work (since it has a better printer):

    1. If you have internet access at work, simply open the project at your computer there and print away.

    2. If you don’t have interent access at work, but are using Windows Vista you can print to the XPS printing device, copy the resulting file on a CD, and print it on your Vista computer at work.

    3. If you don’t have internet access, and are not using vista, you can try and “print to file”. To do this bring up the print dialog and select the “print to file” dialog. This will ask you to specify the file you want to print to and then will save the file in a post script format. Copy this file to your work computer. You then need a program, such as GhostScript (freeware) that can load and print the postscript file. Open the postscript file and print away.

    4. If you have access to PDF creation utilities you could also use that as your solution and then use Adobe Acrobat at work to print it.

    Good luck!
